This week we continued to work hard and to learn while having fun in Grade 1 ESL.
We continued the study of phonics using the Jolly Phonics program; this week we studied the phonemesqu, th, and ou. We used them in singing, reading and writing, as they are a great help for our students at this stage in their learning.
In Guided Reading we explored books such as: Sam’s Race, Little Teddy and Monkey, Ben’s Teddy Bearand Lilly’s Play House. The complexity level of our books continues to increase, as our students become more confident while reading and as their decoding and comprehension skills develop.
We wrote another recount during Guided Writing, and because we wrote about our long weekend, the students were challenged to move from writing one or two sentences to expanding their writing in order to tell about each of the 4 days of our weekend last week. The students were also encouraged to write with a stronger voice and to express their feelings when writing.
We played action games such as Simon Says, where students were encouraged to give direction to each other, and Headbandz, which offered our students the opportunity to ask and answer questions in order to guess what was on their secret card.

It is my pleasure to share with you some of the wonderful things our students have been doing in the Grade 1 ESL class this week.
We continued the study of Jolly Phonics, and this week we focused on the following phonemes: x, ch andsh. As the level of difficulty of the phonemes increases, we spend more time practicing them through reading, writing and songs, so the students may become increasingly familiar with them.
In Guided Reading we looked at books such as: Shopping, My Dad, The Pet Shop, and Playing. Through these books, we targeted vocabulary such as: food, clothes, animals and places where we can play. We placed a great emphasis on sequencing words and on how we can use them in writing and speaking. Our students are becoming increasingly familiar with the use of first, next, then, after, last.
During Writing, we continued to interview each other in order to find out the similarities and differences between our families. Next, we wrote about our findings and then we published our writing. Finally, we practiced sharing our writing to each other.
We are looking forward to welcoming you to the Grade 1 Parent Tea on Tuesday, where our students will share with you all the wonderful things they have learned and created during the unit “My Family History”.

The Grade 1 ESL students have been so busy learning and writing about their families lately! In ESL we have learned powerful adjectives to use when we describe people and we have used them to write about our family members, using a wonderfully funny book as mentor text: "My Dog Is As Smelly As Dirty Socks", by Hanoch Piven. We also drew beautiful pictures of the people we chose to describe, and we proudly displayed them for all to see.
We were very happy and surprised today when our writing was appreciated and rewarded by Ms. Dingle. Each amazing grade 1 ESL writer received a medal for wonderful writing and also a sweet surprise! Thank you very much, Ms. Dingle and well done, Grade 1 ESL!
