LEADING With The Heart In Mind

Making Inferences

In Grade 4 ESL, we are focusing on making inferences when we read. Today we used Tommie dePaola's book The Art Lesson to practice this reading strategy.
We had a provoking and engaging time using the thinking prompts
"Because the author said..., and I know..., I infer that...".
After the mini-lesson where we used this mentor text together, the students went on to read independently and practice making inferences on their own. Although I was a bit apprehensive at the beginning, because of the (still) fairly low English level of my students, I think this was a successful approach to teaching inferring to English language learners.
